Hey2!! i just want to ask something... but this is not related to the topic we learn.. just curious about it..
When we drop an eye drop into the eyes... Why can we feel a bitter taste at the throat/esophagus?
How can we get rid of this bitter taste?

Thankz....

ming kwang said...

Because ur eyes is connected to the body...meaning ur so called wire inside ur body...So when u drop an eye drop in ur eyes, ur brain wave send something to ur sense of taste, hence u feel bitter when eye drops is dropped in ur eyes.
I think is like tat...:D

Anonymous said...

The bitter taste actually come from the eye drop, the eyes and throat is connected with somehow like a, passageway or a channel. Thus when you apply eye drops onto your eyes, the eye drops will then flow through the passage way along the throat, which cause the bitter taste. To get rid of it? Drink a cup of fruit juice after applying. But it might just help to minimize the bitter tastes, won't be really disguising the whole bitter taste. Easy and simple eh? :D

Hi everyone...remember to leave your name at the end of your comments or question. BASIC rule so that I know who are you....:-)

Good to see that some already using the blog... use it wisely to discuss Physics then! Hooray.

As for the eye question, there is a tube that links the eye to the throat. That's why. Anyone bother to find out the name of this tube? That's why when you cry, you also have a running nose as tears will be flowing into your nose and throat! Hence, you literally swallow your tears when you cry...get it?

i want to ask how people in space can urninate or even big business there... and one more , can plants and trees also sleep?

those may not be related to the topic we learnt ,but im juz curious.

Janson said...

Hmm people in space should be urinating and doing big bussiness there normally like they use too on earth. The urine and feces would be flush out into space.
Plants and trees do not sleep, they photosynthesize more than respiration during the day as there is sunlight but during the night they respire more then photosynthesize.. i hope this is the answer to what you are looking for :/

The tube that links the eye to the throat is nasolacrimal duct AKA tears duct. When there is excess tears, these excess tears flow through nasolacrimal duct which opens in the nose. This is the reason the nose starts to run when a person is crying, or why you can sometimes taste eye drops.

Janson (29) 303 =)

Good Janson!
At least you try to go and find out the ans....although I cannot verify your answers :-) cannot remember too ha ha.
As for Byung Sun's question, they wear diapers! No No they have special tubes......up to your imagination though.

anyhow janson... u copy ur answer from what website men.. "The tube that links the eye to the throat is nasolacrimal duct AKA tears duct." what on earth this means?
use ur own word men.. dun copy copy haha

Yoo!! im backk....
sometimes when it is going to rain, the cloudy became grey colour. how does it formed? and how come sometime when it rain on a sunny day but the cloud is not grey colour?

xD

Unknown said...

Its all in the cloud level and the amount of moisture. Since clouds that produce rain tend to be at a lower atmospheric height above the earth's surface, and since they are thicker, they block out the suns rays more effectively than a fair weather cloud, and that is why rain clouds look gray, but they really aren't. If you ever have the chance to see a thunderhead from a distance, the bottom will look gray, but if you look at the top where the sun can shine on the clouds, you will see that is actually white, not gray.

Janson said...

To byung sun : It means that the tube that links the eye to the throat is called nasolacrimal duct also known as tears duct.

To Johan :As a cloud matures, the droplets in the cloud tend combine together to produce larger droplets, this combination forms droplets large enough to fall as rain. In this process of accumulation, the space between droplets becomes larger and larger, enabling light to penetrate much further into the cloud. If the cloud is large enough and the droplets within are spaced far enough apart, it may be that a certain percentage of the sun light that enters the cloud is not reflected back out before it is absorbed.(As we all know that sun light have all 7 different colours)
This leads to the range of cloud color from white through grey through black.

to janson: so what's tt got to do with plant sleeping?? plants do not have eyes...

Navin Vijayan said...

are there more types of em waves?

Janson said...

To byung sun : You do not need eyes to sleep .. Sleeping is almost the same as resting ..
Plants do not rest, they will photosynthesize everyday and night >.> In case if you do not know what is photosynthesize .. it means making food (for plants)by taking in carbon dioxide, sunlight and water converting them into glucose/sugar (food for plants)

Answering to the question on topic sound. Mr Chua's Q: why the sound travel upwards in cool air and downwars in warm air?

My ANS : Sound travels from higher pressure to lower pressure region. Therefore the direction of sound goes down in cool air.. Same thing goes on to sound travelling in warm air.

ming kwang said...

To Janson ===>
I tot there is a term for plants at night. Its not photosynthesize wad...at night it makes use of oxygen for something don't know call one wad ...cant remember alr...~_________~
Its in ur pri 3 text.
(=

Janson said...

To Ming kwang : It is called respiration ... Plants photosynthesize and respire both in the day and night .. it is just that during day it PHOTOSYNTHESIZE MORE than it respire but during the night it RESPIRE LESS than it photosynthesize

meblog said...

Good try Byung Sun, bonus for you!

But.....answer not so right, anyone want to try?

Unknown said...

hey this Q is actually more to Maths rather than Science.. Who can solve this... ?

There are 5 houses in 5 different colors
In each house lives a person with a different nationality
These 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet
No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink the same drink.
Here's the question: Who owns the fish?

1. The Brit lives in a red house
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets
3. The Dane drinks tea
4. The green house is on the left of the white house
5. The green house owner drinks coffee
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds
7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill
8. The man living in the house right in the middle drinks milk
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house
10. The man who smokes Blend lives next door to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next door to the man who smokes Dunhill
12. The owner who smokes Blue Master drinks beer
13. The German smokes Prince
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house
15. The man who smokes Blend has a neighbor who drinks water

With these 15 clues the problem is solvable.
Here's the question: Who owns the fish?

er... when i use my own elbow to press on my own tie.. it doesnt effect much... but when other people use his/her elbow to press on MY tie... why can we felt sort of "itchiness"?

ming kwang said...

I think i noe the answer.
It's because u urself before u do that...ur brain already send waves to ur movements. Its obviously tat u already noe u will feel itchy...hence the force u do on the tie wont cause so much effect.
But wheras if ur friend do...he/she just add the amount of force to it as they have an urge to do it too.
Am i right?

johan said...

Nope Mingkwang... >.< Nice Try..

Unknown said...

anyhow mingkwang haha..
u said "brain already send waves to ur movements. Its obviously tat u already noe u will feel itchy"

so what about when u noe tt friend is going to press ur tie, it will be still itchy whereby ur brain know it alr.. so how can u explain this ..?

meblog said...

To Navin
EM spectrum contains all the EM waves, that's it.
To the rest of you....try to categorise your questions or else this blog will go VERY long.
Good to see some of you very active in the discussion. Hooray! Keep it up.

sometimes, when i look at people yawning, i got affected.. meaning that i will yawn also.. why is it so?(not only me.. my friend, maid also affected)

johan said...

today i went to parkway.. it was so windy.. i saw dried leaves on the ground.. when the wind hits the leaves, the leaves rotate... its looks like small tornado.. so, my question is... does wind travel on a straight line or circle? Why?

meblog said...

Johan
First, why are you absent from school today....SPA very important you know? You miss lab means you lose one chance to practice.
Anyway, your yawning question is a Bio question! See if anyone can answer you....commonsense question eh? Wind can move in all direction, can also move in a circle. That is why you see the leaves rotate!

johan said...

Mr chua,
Sorry i was absent yesterday. I need to take care of my mom. She had just went for operation the day before and she is weak. So, i took care of her+do housework things.
Sorry once again..

Oh yes, I hope all of you will maximise this blog. Use this blog to discuss actively Physics questions. When I am free, I will log on to see.
Do not be sad, just study hard and hopefully one day you will LOVE physics! Yeah!

Rosalind Lee said...

Rosalind here.I want to ask whether pure physics is managable because i seen many people not doing well in it and their sec2 results were good.My friends can't get A1 and I remembered you saying it's demoralising if you don't do well.I spent the holidays revising my old sec2 and sec1 chemistry and physics but I'm still feeling pessimistic about not doing well in sec3...HELP!!!!!By the way,is momentum tested for Ó Level? And Newton's 1st law is like the law of inertia?

meblog said...

Rosalind
I do not mean to demoralise you. However, I am just stating the facts that pure sciences require different skills set. From O Level results, you can also conclude for yourself that getting distinction is not easy. Not only do you have to work hard, you need a lot of thinking skills to be able to answer pure science questions.
My suggestion to students is very simple, if you work very hard and yet find difficulty, then in order to get distinction, combine science would be a wiser choice.

Rosalind Lee said...

Ohh I see..Yes I remembered that youi said that pure science requires critical thinking especially for skill set 3.So far I had only seen 1 person in 403 gotten herself A1 for both chemistry and physics and I realised that she's hard-working to the extent that she would do anything to improve her grades.I learnt from her attitude compared to her classmates who kept saying pure science is difficult but for her she didn't give up at all.
You also mentioned that we must be very consistent in our work too and the pace is very fast so I followed your advice and did pratice in my assesment books helped alot so now I must be more optimistic.

meblog said...

Yes. Hard work is only one of the many pre-requisite to do well. The ability to think critically, ability to apply your knowledge etc are also essential attributes to do well in pure sciences. Only then will you be guaranteed a good grade. Since 2004, there has been no students from PYSS who got BOTH pure sciences A1 that I can remember. So you can see that it is rather tough.

Rosalind Lee said...

Yes it's tough but it's possible to get A1 for both sciences with critical thinking, pratice, hardwork etc.I find much difficulty too because not only the pace is fast, they're teaching many things that we aren't exposed to like terminal velocity etc.By the way,why did you set the questions in our graded assignments to be of the difficulty which is beyond out ability to do it?eg. 1 question required the cos. rule which isn't taught to us.

meblog said...

Perseverance Yields Success.....it is not impossible to get both A1. The problem mostly lie with the ability to persevere and not giving up. So wish that you will get both A1 in future! Not that you are not taught of the cosine rule but rather you have not been taught yet. However, being double Maths students, you can learn on your own first. It is impossible for the topics to be aligned one after another.

Rosalind Lee said...

Yeah but I''m finding it hard to adapt to sec3 life as I'm bombarded with so much homework everyday.I'm experiencing now the worst drastic decline in my studies right now but kept telling myself to cling on to life even when it's full of torment and endure.I had no idea why everyone says I'm doing extremely well right now and that I won't drop to combined science.I don't get it at all.You see,I'm not as intelligent as the people in Raffles etc. My PSLE score was 194(I flunked completely in primary school eg.maths, chinese and english can't even pass AT ALL) and felt that I DON'T HAVE intelligence at all.
By the way,I think the difference between zero gravitational acceleration and no net force is that zero gravitational acceleration kept an object in motion but in no net force(Fnet=0),the object remains stationary. So I think the answer to the question on why astronauts remain weightlessness is because the gravitational acceleration is zero.Question doesn't mention about velocity of object.

meblog said...

Upper sec students will inevitably face greater pressure because they are nearer the O Level exam. Hence, it is important to maintain a balance lifestyle and not be affected. Of course, managing stress is important to everyone (not only students). Do not live in the past but look forward. PSLE score is an indication of your performance during PSLE, but it may not necessary be an indication of your future. Your future depends on your effort now. All of us are born equal, i.e. everyone has a brain, and how we use it is up to us. Some may handle things in an easier way but that does not mean we cannot. When you have doubts with your classwork, discuss it with your teacher.

Rosalind Lee said...

Yeah it's true. But talking about the past just reminded me of my sad past!I found it difficult to cope with Singapore's education system compared to my coutry's education system and my English and Chinese was so bad till people don't understand what I'm trying to say.I struggled in my primary school and totally gave up on myself and my classmates treated me with disdain because they knew I was a foreigner in tne first place and no one understands how I feel.Thank goodness my efforts really paid off in sec1 and 2 whereby I persevered and endure the torment I faced.Sec3 life is full of torment but persevering really helps a lot as I kept telling myself that I can do this and I believe in what doesn't break you only makes you stronger.Discussing my doubts with the teachers helped and yeah, understanding is the key to effective learning.
